There are several things which might have happened. Sash windows use hidden pulleys cords and weights to operate, if these have snapped the window may be too heavy to stay open. Check for broken parts. Quite often the pullies simply wear out and the mechanism becomes jammed. Over time, layers of paint can cause the sash window to stick Timber Damage. Over time, without correct and regular maintenance the timbers deteriorate which can hinder the smooth and efficient operation of your windows. Remember, if you’re unsure or encounter difficulties, it’s best to consult a professional for proper repair. Attempting DIY fixes may lead to further damage.

The traditional construction of a sash window requires tolerance in the frame to allow the sashes to side up and down, unfortunately with wear and tear these become greater than when manufactured, Locking mechanisms break, leading to drafts and rattles. So what can I do? A basic restoration by Joinery and Heritage Craftsmen , involves removing the sliding sashes, checking and balancing the weights and replacing the cords and pullies. On replacing we retro fit new parting beads and staff beads, which incorporate a brush draft excluder, we also fit a brush draft excluder where the top and bottom sashes meet.
Absolutely yes, in most cases we are able restore the original windows, splicing in new timbers and making resin repairs to match the existing and even replacing the cills. When finished they look like new and last as long as new windows.
For the frames we carefully select the type of woods. It costs the same but you get a superior product when the wood is slowly grown its more durable and lasts longer than the quickly grown timber you are likely to find in a DIY outlet. For Cill sections we use either Hardwoods such as Sapele or Oak or and Engineered timber such as Acoya.
Yes you can. We can retro fit. We can manufacture new sliding casements which incorporate individual 12mm thick Heritage Double glazed units. And build new.
Normally a straightforward restoration does not pose any problems, however when you wish to upgrade to double glazing or require replacement frames listed Building Approval must be sought. We can deal with the planners on your behalf submitting Plans ,Design and Access Statements and Heritage Impact Assessment documents.
As part of our standard stage restoration all timber is sanded down to remove loose paint and all new timbers are primed. For an additional cost we can complete the decoration, however due to our wonderful British climate we may not be able to do this at the same time as a restoration.
